課程概述

Course Description:
This course deals with models of cultural practice and production based on distributed authorship and exemplified in the contemporary world by open source software development. While such models have often been affirmed as pointing to a utopian “democracy of the multitude,” there are also accounts associating them to the need of late capitalist assemblages to be flexible and rhizomatic in coping with fast-changing market situations. We will review major theorizations and develop a new understanding based on related theories of time, mediation, and futurity (Bergson, Deleuze) as well as attempts to connect open source culture to an economy of contribution where its utopian elements become “pharmacological” (Stiegler).

課程目標
Course Objectives:
The cultural practices of open source culture are very much dependent on technological developments foregrounding to an unprecedented extent the values of cognitive and communicational work (“immaterial labor”). An adequate account of such practices is therefore vital to the thriving not only of creative media production (textual or otherwise) but of education and in particular of the field of literary studies with its investment in being a provider of cognitive labor force. The main objectives of this course are, therefore, to describe and respond to such transformations in political economy and to help students develop such an account by focusing on open source culture and by using materials available in their own field to shed light on their position and the position of their profession in the contemporary world.
